8) Brentwood Cathedral

Architect - Erith and Terry

Contractor - Sindall Construction

Brief description of work carried out –

The last Roman Catholic Cathedral to be built in Britain was built as an extension to a small Roman Catholic Church in Brentwood, Essex. Designed by the celebrated classical Architects Erith and Terry, George Cook and Sons were winners of the Plaisterers Trophy in 1991 for the decorative fibrous plasterwork on the project, deemed to be the best in the U.K. for the previous year. The work consisted of a panelled ceiling edged by a guilloche cornice which continued around a central lantern and a large triglyph cornice at mid height. Cooks were also responsible for the solid plasterwork which provided the perfect background for the fibrous plaster mouldings.
